In the Women’s Wimbledon final, Serena Williams will face a very unlikely opponent in Vera Zvonareva. The Russian has been better known for her on the court antics than for winning tournaments. Nevertheless, the 25-year-old Russian defeated fellow underdog Tsvetana Pironkova in the semifinals yesterday convincingly, setting herself up for the world #1 women’s tennis player. Williams defeated her sister Venus in last year’s final for her fourth Wimbledon title and can capture her second Grand Slam of the year with a win on Saturday. Serena has yet to lost a set thus far in the entire tournament, but Zvonareva has played the American tough in the past. Will the calm, intelligent Zvonareva show up in her first Grand Slam final or will the “Crybaby” antics the Russian tennis player is known for rule the day? We’ll find out this weekend at the All England Club.

The tennis world will firmly turn its attention to Paris, French on Sunday as the best players in the world compete in the second grand slam of the year. On the Men’s side, Roger Federer will make his French Open title defense coming off a lose earlier this month to adversary Rafael Nadal at the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open. Rog reigned supreme at The Australian Open, but many are looking to Nadal to make a play for his first Grand Slam of the year. Jo-Wilfred Tsonga will have the home crowd behind him as the only Frenchmen currently in the APT Top 10. On the ladies’ end, world #5 Svetlana Kuznetsova claimed the top prize in 2009 at Roland Garros, dispatching fellow Russian Dinara Safina. Serena Williams would love to win her second Grand Slam of the year after her brilliant performance in Melbourne this past January. Having only won once (1999) at Roland Garros, The French Open has been the most elusive of the Grand Slams for Williams. We shall see if Serena can continue her dominance over the sport this week in Paris.

The Open GDF Suez is well underway, with the quarterfinals just coming up. In this bunch of people, we can see Serena Williams, Jankovic and Dementieva. Seeing these three in this part of the tournament isn’t much of a surprise, I must say, since they are three of the best players in the world right now. It’s kind of surprising to me, though, that they just kept playing after the Australian Open, which Serena won. It seems like one would need a week or two to get the energy back from that kind of thing. However, here we are and they are playing well. This isn’t going to be a major clash of the Titans, but it is going to be a good competition, between several impressive players.

Serena Williams had to recently bow out of the WTA Championships due to a stomach injury she most likely suffered while playing against (coincidentally) her sister Venus. According to Serena, the pain would follow her even when she was engaged in the relatively motionless act of sleeping. Also pulling out of the WTA Championships was Ana Ivanovic due to a viral illness. Goto tennis.com and learn more about the rest of the players in contention for the WTA Championship.

The dream of US tennis star Serena Williams of wining the French Open this year did not turn into a reality as she was easily beaten in the third round by Katrina Srebotnik 6-4, 6-4 in the third round. Serena showed very poor tennis form in the match and most of her overheads, volleys and forehands missed the target. This was the first time that Serena had to leave French Open so early. She was quick to admit that she missed easy shots when the chips were down. She was not in her usual groove in the match and Serena Williams’s fans who had bought tickets to watch her power tennis were a dejected lot.

Maria Sharapova’s dream of clinching her second successive clay court title received a severe jolt when she was defeated by arch rival Serena Williams in the quarter finals of the Family Circle Cup on Friday. Serena improved her career record against the Russian blonde to 5-2 beat her in three sets with a score line of 7-5, 4-6, 6-1. Serena was able to really break free from the Sharapova shackles only in the third set and is well on course to claim her their successive tournament after winning at Bangalore as well as Miami.
Serena has showed some tremendous tennis skills this season and she has also received good reviews from current as well a ex-players for the same. Serena, who is currently number nine in the world, knows pretty well that her road to claiming the Family Circler Cup is now easy after the defeat of defending champion Jelena Jankovic by Russian Zvonareva.
