Rafael Nadal could quite possibly have been one of the most famous players never to have reached no.1 spot but all that is about to change as Rafael Nadal finally enters a grand slam as no.1. He won the Olympic Gold last week and is now looking to win the US Open too. He is followed by Swiss Roger Federer whose 237 successive week came to an end. Andy Roddick was the highest seeded American at no.8 follwed by Blake at ninth spot. British number one Murray would also be looking to improve on his sixth standing after a disappointing first round exit from the Beijing Olympics.

Rafael Nadal breezed into the third round of the Olympics by beating Australian Lleyton Hewitt 6-2, 6-1 who had no answer to Nadal’s powerful baseline shots. Hewitt did save three set points in the first set but Nadal quickly wrapped up the set. It was the same story in the second set as well, however Hewitt did break Nadal’s serve on the second game but the Spaniard was again on top of his game. The match took just more than 90 minutes to conclude and was one of Nadal’s best performances. Nadal will face Russia’s Igor Andreev but he is not expected to be much of a challenge for him.

Roger Federer wants to improve the disappointing season by winning gold at the Beijing Olympics. After losing the French Open and the Wimbledon to Nadal and reaching just the semi-finals of the Australian Open, Federer has had a rather disappointing season. He is looking to set things straight by winning gold at the Olympics and then the US Open. If he fails to do so, it would be his first year since 2002 without winning a single Grand Slam. Federer still has stiff competition in the form of in form Nadal, Djokivic and Andy Murray. Federer will make his 27th Birthday in style by carrying the Swiss flag in the Opening ceremony of the Olympics.
