The American and Russian players will compete for the 2007 trophy in the best-of-5 match tie that starts today. The participants are too focused on the game itself to give much thought to any cultural or political ramifications. United States Number 1 Andy Roddick was asked if he recalled a time, when US-Russian clashes in any sport carried Cold War overtones. The player said that the only bad Russian he remembered growing up was Drago against Rocky, referring to the 4th installment of Sylvester Stallone’s “Rocky” fight movies.

Russia relies on recent form while the United States pin their hopes on home advantage in this week’s final of Davis Cup. Headed by world Number 4 Nikolay Davydenko, the Russians will hunt their 3rd Davis Cup title in 6 years, when the 3-day tie starts tomorrow in Portland, Oregon. The Americans are seen as favorites, however, Russia has clearly established a winning formula in this men’s team event.

Roger Federer, tennis world No. 1, is going to send a global televised message in order to raise awareness of mother-to-child HIV transmission to mark World AIDS Day on December 1. The famous tennis player, who is also a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, will star in the thirty-second video message, that will be recorded in separate English, German, and French versions. The video will be distributed to broadcasters around the world. Roger Federer confessed his willingness to play his part and use his sporting profile to help foster motivation and hope amongst the children, who were affected by the deadly disease
